“Mossie milestone as Polish researcher Wieslaw Krzeminski says he has identified the world’s oldest mosquito, a 240-million-year-old specimen from the University of Strasbourg’s collection. Krzeminski claims his mossie milestone beats the record by 32 million years. No need for insect repellent back then, says the researcher, his specimen was no blood-sucker, preferring to suck the sap of trees.” (NZ Herald, Thursday, January 18, 2001 – via Bruce McCartney NZ)
Editorial Comment: Don’t be surprised at the diet. Genesis says all creatures started their dietary careers as vegetarians. The male mosquito still only sucks plant sap. It’s the female that puts the bite on you, and that is only when she needs iron and protein to lay eggs.
