“Impossible planet” with three suns reported in news@nature, ScienceNOW, 13 July 2005 and BBC News, 18 July 2005.
Maciej Konacki of the California Institute of Technology has found a planet associated with a star known as HD 188753 in the constellation Cygnus (the Swan) 149 light years away. However, as ScienceNOW writer Govert Schilling puts it: “There’s just one problem: It shouldn’t exist.”
The problem is the star is part of a three-star system and according to all present theories on the evolution of planets, the presence of two other stars should prevent any planet from forming around HD 188753. The new planet is believed to a gas giant, similar to, but larger than Jupiter. But unlike Jupiter, it orbits very close to its star. According to current theories, planets form from discs of gas and dust surrounding newly formed stars. Gas giants like Jupiter are believed to form far away from their star, where it is cold enough for ice crystals to form and aggregate into masses large enough to attract huge amounts of gas and dust from the disc surrounding the star. Recently a number of Jupiter-like planets have been found orbiting very close to stars, where it would be too hot for ice crystals to form, so planetary scientists came up with the migration theory, i.e. these “hot Jupiters” were formed far away from their star by the ice and dust aggregation process, but then migrated closer to their star after they had formed into a gas giant.
The newly found planet is a gas giant orbiting close to its star, but it could not have formed any further away from its star because the gravitational forces resulting from having two other stars in the triple system would keep the gas and dust disc within a radius of 200 million kilometres of the primary star, where it is too hot for ice crystals to form. If any substantial ice crystals accretions did form, the gravity of the two extra stars would smash them to pieces and prevent them from forming a planet. Therefore, the news@nature article called the new planet “the impossible planet” because, “if these planets don’t form, they obviously can’t migrate”.
Astronomer Artie Hatzes of the Thuringia State Observatory, Germany commented: “You shouldn’t see it, but you do see it”.
Editorial Comment: When you find something that shouldn’t exist according to current evolutionary theories, it is time to change the theories. The gas and dust aggregation theory is popularly believed to explain the evolution of our solar system. This new discovery shoots holes in that belief. Over the last few years cosmologists and astronomers have been constantly revising and modifying theories because new discoveries don’t fit with current theories.
If they would only believe the Creator’s record of the origin and history of the universe they would be spared a lot of time wasting and frustration, and could get on with observing and understanding what is really out there. The Creator of the solar system tells a very different story – the earth was created first before the sun. The rest of the solar system plus the stars were created for the purpose of providing light on the earth and to provide signs and a calendar for human beings (Genesis 1:14-19).
