Georgia judge orders evolution stickers removed as Associated Press reported 14 January 2005. Since 2002. Kenneth Miller has been upset that biology textbooks he has written have a warning sticker attached to them the time they appear in suburban Atlanta schools.
The stickers read, “This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered”
The school board adopted the stickers after a petition drive begun in 2002 by creationist Marjorie Rogers who collected 2,300 signatures from parents. The board stuck the disclaimers on the inside front covers of 13 science books used in middle and high schools. Cobb County school board was ordered to immediately remove the stickers and never again hand them out in any form. Some parents and religious conservatives decried the ruling as another in a string of what opponents call “activist judges; overruling the wishes of elected officials often on matters of religion.
Editorial Comment: The bottom line is that these stickers were removed because they posed a challenge to the ruling USA Humanist legal and educational authorities whose philosophical and religious foundation is evolution. George Bush will have to replace these Federally appointed Judges if the conservative and often creationist public school authorities are to ever win the battle. (Ref. education, America, democracy)
