In an interview for the journalNature, vol. 457, p967, 19 Feb 2009 David Attenborough was asked: “Why is teaching evolution now more important than ever?”
Attenborough’s reply:
“Because of the influence of the Bible’s book of Genesis, which says the Lord God said ‘go forth and multiply’ to Adam and Eve and ‘the natural world is there for you to dominate, you have dominion of the animals and plants of the world’. That basic notion – that the world is there for us, and if it doesn’t serve our purposes it’s dispensable – has produced the devastation of vast areas. We have assumed that we can build a house on it, dig it up, put tarmac over it; that’s OK because it’s there for us. In finding solutions to our ecological problems we have to understand evolutionary processes.”
Editorial Comment: Have you noticed that Sir David never mentions Genesis 3, which reminds us that any and all abuse of anything is due to mankind’s rebellion against the Creator and His rules. Our prediction: evolution will never find a solution to the tendency of man to destroy the planet, to man’s propensity for greed which is destroying the world economy, or to the lust for power which spurs politicians on to use climate to gain world power. Only when you deal with man’s rebellion against the Creator, which has made us all sinners who need a Saviour, will you get anywhere close to a solution for any of these problems.
