“Best dated biblical structure” confirmed by carbon dating, according to Nature Science Update, 11 Sep 2003.

Geologist Amos Frumkin of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem has carbon dated plant remains embedded in the plaster lining the Siloam Tunnel that bring water into Jerusalem. His results indicated the tunnel was built around 700BC, corresponding exactly with the reign of King Hezekiah (727 – 698 BC). This finding confirms the Biblical account of the building of the tunnel as described in the Old Testament books of 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles. The date of the tunnel has been disputed because some scholars claimed an inscription near the exit indicated it was built around 2 BC. James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool, UK commented “This scientific verification of historical details in the Bible challenges those who do not wish to take it seriously.”

Editorial Comment: C14 is a short lived radio isotope which works reasonably well for Biblical dates after 1,000 BC. The reason is that it probably didn’t start to form much until after the flood, and the closer we get to the present the more reliable this dating method is.
