Pope “insists God responsible for Big Bang” according to article in The Telegraph 28 October 2014. In an address to a meeting entitled “Evolving Concepts of Nature” at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Pope Francis claimed God was responsible for the Big Bang, and from this all life then evolved. He stated: “Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve”. He went on to say: “When we read about creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so”.

The Pope’s address was welcomed by Giovanni Bignami, the president of Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics. He commented: “We are the descendants of the Big Bang, which created the universe. You just have to think that in our blood we have a few litres of hydrogen, which was created by the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago. Our blood is red because it contains iron, which was created by the explosion of a star millions and millions of years ago. Out of creation came evolution”.

Editorial Comment: If the Pope was God we would be impressed, but until then neither Martin Luther nor we are! Don’t forget Luther’s very relevant comments: “When Moses writes that God created Heaven and Earth and whatever is in them in six days, then let this period continue to have been six days, and do not venture to devise any comment according to which six days were one day. “But, if you cannot understand how this could have been done in six days, then grant the Holy Spirit the honor of being more learned than you are”. (Martin Luther, What Martin Luther Says: A Practical Home Anthology for the Active, p. 1523)

If the Pope’s god is not able to do everything, then he is not the God of the Bible, who created all things by the power of His word. A god who can’t do everything is no god at all.

The acclaim given the Pope from secular astrophysicists reminds us the warning given by Christ the Creator: “Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets”. (Luke 6:26). Sadly many church leaders value academic acclaim above the Word of God, and end up devaluing the authority of both God and His Word in both the church and the world. For this reason we are prepared to debate theistic evolutionists as well as secular sceptics.

It seems Popes don’t evolve one bit – false prophets for centuries!
