Pro-Gays Please Leave, advises Aussie Anglican Archbishop to same sex marriage supporters, according to ABC News and Sydney Morning Herald 15 October 2019.
Glenn Davies, the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, has told those who want to bless same sex marriages they should leave the Anglican Church. In a speech to the Anglican Synod for Sydney Diocese he said: “My own view is that if people wish to change the doctrine of our church, they should start a new church or join a church more aligned to their views – but do not ruin the Anglican Church by abandoning the plain teaching of Scripture. Please leave us. We have far too much work to do in evangelising Australia to be distracted by the constant pressure to change our doctrine in order to satisfy the lusts and pleasures of the world.”
According to the Archbishop, blessing same sex marriages is to “betray God’s word”.
Same sex marriage has been legalised in Australia, but Archbishop Davies stated: “Nonetheless, God’s intention for marriage has not changed. We honour him when we abide by his instruction. We cannot bless same-sex marriages for the simple reason that we cannot bless sin.”
Editorial Comment: We commend Archbishop Davies for taking a stand on the authority of God’s word, and being prepared to call homosexuality what the Creator God calls it – sin!
We also commend him for prioritising evangelism, i.e. telling people the good news that sins can be forgiven. The good news for homosexuals, and for all sinners, is the Jesus died and rose from the dead to take away their sin and give them new life, but He demands they repent of their sin, for it must be turned away from, not blessed. To bless sin is keep people in their sins and out of the Kingdom of God.
Sadly, the church in general is losing the battle over same sex marriage because it hasn’t stood its ground on the authority of Scripture. The basis for marriage being one man and one woman is firmly established in Genesis 1 and 2 with the creation of the first man and woman, which was affirmed by Jesus during his earthly life (Matthew 19:1-6). By allowing, and even actively promoting, the replacement of Genesis with evolutionary theory of the origin of mankind, church leaders have removed any basis for claiming humans are unique creations made in the image of God, and that God has the authority to tell us what is right and wrong in human relationships.
