Christian doctor sacked for transgender challenge, according to a report in Christian Concern 2 October 2019.
Dr David Mackereth, an Accident and Emergency doctor in the British National Health Service has been sacked from a position as a disability assessor with the Department of Work and Pensions because he refuses to use ‘transgender pronouns’. During a training course he was asked hypothetically if he would call a six-foot bearded man ‘madam’. He said he would not because he believed gender is determined by biology and genetics, and cannot be changed, and he believed the Bible, which states human beings were created male and female (Genesis 1:27).
An Employment Tribunal has now ruled “belief in Genesis 1:27, lack of belief in transgenderism and conscientious objection to transgenderism in our judgment are incompatible with human dignity”.
Dr Mackereth intends to appeal. He commented: “No doctor, or researcher, or philosopher, can demonstrate or prove that a person can change sex. Without intellectual and moral integrity, medicine cannot function and my 30 years as a doctor are now considered irrelevant compared to the risk that someone else might be offended.”
Editorial Comment: Dr Mackereth is correct in asserting that medicine must be based on biological facts and moral integrity. It is a biological fact that the sex of human beings is determined by their genes at conception, which means every cell in the body is male or female, and that cannot be changed by disrupting normal hormones with chemicals or by physically damaging the body structure. It is immoral to perpetuate a lie that tells young people they can pretend be something they are not.
We would also ask the judges who claim believing that human beings were created by God is “incompatible with human dignity”, do they think it enhances human dignity to believe we are just animals whose origin is chance chemical processes and whose destiny in just chemical decay? The whole concept of human dignity comes from the fact the human beings are made in the Image of God the Creator and therefore have eternal value and eternal destiny.
