11,000 scientists declare climate emergency in an article in BioScience 5 November 2019 doi: 10.1093/biosci/biz088.
The article published by The Alliance of World Scientists (AWS) based at Oregon State University, begins with the following paragraph:
Scientists have a moral obligation to clearly warn humanity of any catastrophic threat and to “tell it like it is.” On the basis of this obligation and the graphical indicators presented below, we declare, with more than 11,000 scientist signatories from around the world, clearly and unequivocally that planet Earth is facing a climate emergency. (Item in inverted commas in original)
The article was published by on the 40th anniversary of the first World Climate Conference held in Geneva in 1979. It then presents a series of graphs of “Change in global human activities” and “Climatic response time series” from 1979 to the present”. Human activities include population, energy consumption, meat consumption, air travel, carbon dioxide emissions, tree cover loss and world GDP.
The climatic responses include carbon dioxide and methane levels, changes in surface temperatures, Artic and Antarctic ice, sea level changes and “Extreme climate/weather/hydro events” per year. The directors of AWS claim it is “the only independent, grass-roots organization comprised of scientists from around the world committed to the well-being of humanity and the planet.”
Their solutions to the emergency include “Eating mostly plant-based foods while reducing the global consumption of animal products”, leaving fossil fuels in the ground and “escalating carbon prices to restrain their use”, and “the world population must be stabilised and, ideally, gradually reduced”.
Editorial Comment: So, they have data back to 1979? Amazing! And you are right – most media reports failed to mention the evidence went only back to 1979. Which means the graphs so beautifully presented in this paper date from just after National Geographic and others declared the world would freeze to death with a global ice-age, based on the same type of data from previous decades.
Whilst 11,000 scientists may declare a climate emergency, the one Creator and Judge, who really controls the climate, declared ages ago: “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:22) In other words, from Noah’s Flood to the end of the world, there would be regular patterns and cycles, including periods of cold and heat.
As for the solutions proposed by AWS – we predict these will not change climate. They will simply give more money and power to authoritarian governments who want to increase taxes and regulate people’s lives. The real solution to the world’s problems is to deal with root cause – human sin. The Creator and Judge, who sent the world’s most drastic climate change, i.e. Noah’s Flood, is also the Saviour, who died and rose again to take away our sin, and will return to judge the earth with a much more massive global warming than rebellious scientists can imagine.
